The Indiana Star has run an article talking about this years homecoming, and our family in general: "Elijah Roberts' descendants celebrate his legacy." They've also posted several pictures of the event!

It's Almost Time!

I hope this letter finds you in good health and in good spirits. It’s that time of year again: we will soon descend on the land of our forefathers to embrace those we love, to remember those we’ve lost, and to welcome those we’ve gained. Keeping with tradition, the weekend itinerary is as follows:
  • Friday We kickoff the weekend events with hot dogs and a hayride starting at 7PM.
  • Saturday Early birds can get in a round of golf at Stoney Creek; tee times start at 7AM. Contact Jerry Granger as soon as possible to participate. Dinner will begin at 1PM. The board will provide chicken, but we ask that you bring your favorite side to supplement. The afternoon program will start shortly thereafter around 2:30.
  • Sunday Year after year our very own Rev. Robert Hayes Jr. has sent us off with an up-lifting message. He will be doing it again this year, starting at 9AM.
This year we are asking everyone to bring old pictures, regardless of the format. We will have facilities to scan prints, and to download digitals, on the spot. Our goal is to start a running archive for both the web and for future generations.

We will have t-shirts available for purchase, and will be filling orders from last year. Shirts are between $10 and $12, depending on size. In addition, we will also be selling magnets and note cards. Keep in mind that on top of making you look cool, purchasing these items will help in maintaining the settlement. With respect to maintenance, we will be replacing the front porch of the church prior to the fourth and replacing the security doors shortly thereafter. Unfortunately this isn’t cheap: we’re looking at almost $3,000 to do both. If you have the ability to help with this in any way, please do. One way is through donations. These can be made during the homecoming, or by sending mail to the settlement address listed above. This is something those that came before us had to do, so let’s not drop the ball.

Thanks for keeping Roberts Settlement going. I can’t wait to see you on the 1st!

Homecoming 2011

I trust that everyone's families are well. I know this winter has been a hard one: heating requirements, along with gas prices, have done nothing but increase.

We closed 2010 with the election of the of a new board: President Paula Gilliam, Vice President Tom Champion, Recording Secretary Denise Sweat, Corresponding Secretary Jerome White Jr, Treasurer Jerry Granger, and Assistant Treasurer Tonja Goodloe. I ask that we all welcome and embrace this change.

As in the past, we will keep going strong this year with the homecoming start at the evening of July 1st. Come out and enjoy hot-dogs, a hay ride, and family! The Saturday afternoon social gathering will consist of food and our formal gathering. This year will bring a few surprises as well. Sunday we will close with morning church service.

It is our duty, as descendants of Roberts Settlement, to keep the memories of our families alive. They sought to provide a better life for their children. As a settlement, a family, they worked side-by-side to clear the land, plant the crops, and work together when harvest time arrived.

Although times have changed, it remains our duty to continue the tradition of providing a bright future for The Settlement. We may not work the land, but we still need to maintain it. This is done by the continued support of family members, particularly in the form of donations. I would like to see you here but if you can't attend you can send your support by mail.

I look forward to seeing everyone again. You might not have a church home, but you are at home when you come back to Roberts Settlement.

Our new look

Welcome to the new look of Roberts Sett. We're going through a change in our online presence, taking advantage of Google Apps. Hopefully this makes the overall IT management easier, and allows for better collaboration across the family.
